I wanted to write today about some really innovative beauty projects I’ve seen on Kickstarter. For those who don’t know, this is what Kickstarter is in their own words, “Kickstarter helps artists, musicians, filmmakers, designers, and other creators find the resources and support they need to make their ideas a reality. To date, tens of thousands of creative projects — big and small — have come to life with the support of the Kickstarter community.”
Kickstarter is awesome. Some projects just need some money and support to get off the ground! If you think about it – how do beauty brands start in the first place? When makeup artist and photographer, Frank Toskan and beauty salon owner, Frank Angel were frustrated with the lack of makeup colors available to them, they cooked up cosmetics in their own kitchen and sold them right from their beauty salon…it’s now known as MAC Cosmetics (MAYBE you’ve heard of it?) Another woman started her company with 4 skincare products developed in a kitchen (and later, in a lab) by her chemist uncle. The company is now a multi-billion dollar company that still bears her name – Estee Lauder.
There are many more inspiring stories like these. My point is – you gotta start somewhere, right? These are a few projects on Kickstarter that really caught my eye. Could one or more of these be the next big thing? Check em out!
Crowd Colour - Personalised Makeup Palettes
I think this is really cool. People nowadays LOVE options. They love being able to customize things in their lives to make it their own. Enter – Crowd Colour. They want to be “the worlds first, totally customisable beauty brand.” How would that work, you ask? Well – it’s actually pretty simple. Choose your palette size (3 choices) and completely design the cover yourself. Are endless possibilities running through your mind? Me too. Some neat art that you drew? A picture of your dog, maybe? Fave celeb? Here's a photo from their site with a few neat examples:
OK, so now that you picked your palette and cover – what’s next? In the future, you will be able choose what’s inside. The company states, “Future plans for Crowd Colour include the introduction of refill pans for eye, lips, face and brows.” All products will be magnetized on the bottom. So you’d be able to take your self-designed empty palette, and fill it with shadows, lip color, etc that are all YOUR colors. Going out after work? You have one palette that fits all your touch up needs. Going on vacation? Pack one palette that fits it all. I really dig this concept! MAPO® World's First Connected Beauty mask
Beauty masks are EVERYWHERE these days and come in various shapes, textures and mediums. Sheet masks, leave-on masks, wash-off masks, peel-off masks and now even the latest splash masks out of Asia. But something we have yet to see (until now) is what the company describes as "a fully personalized connected, multi-function and easy-to-use beauty mask." Huh? It took some reading into for me, and this diagram helped me to understand it better (taken from their Kickstarter page)
So basically this is like the Jetsons of face masks. Often times, I slap on a sheet mask or charcoal mask without really understanding what my skin needs. How can you really tell if your skin needs more moisture if you don't physically see any negative signs? SCIENCE, that's how. MAPO is almost like a FitBit for your skin. With such a big concentration on skincare these days, something like this could really blow up. It's already making waves on Kickstarter (as a staff favorite pick) and in reputable magazines like Allure, Marie Claire and others. Good luck to this futuristic product! Kickstarter page here: MAPO.
This Kickstarter project solves an age old problem. Everywhere you go, there's different lighting. Often times, not so great lighting, which is bad news for makeup application. This product is a one size fits all mini light that best replicates natural lighting. It attaches to 1 million beauty products (according to the company) and helps you to see what your makeup REALLY looks like before you go outside. See below photo from the company's Kickstarter page:
I can see so many uses for this product - using it at my desk at work, in the car before a date night, every bathroom with crappy lighting, dark bars, the list goes on. Not to mention the commercial side of it - fashion shows, TV shows, the world of flawless makeup on instagram.
Using lights attached to beauty products isn't exactly a new concept - I actually have a Physician's Formula lip gloss that has a light built into the cap. However, it's not detachable. This product can be used on ANY lipstick, brush, eyeliner so that you're makeup is always looking fresh and blended. It's also cute, compact and comes in a variety of colors (because we love options!) Check out their Kickstarter page here: BeautyBeam
That's all for today! Thanks for reading and have a great Sunday!
